2015 Summer Institute Session Descriptions

 

 

Course Description: Critical Thinking Through Engineering  (course is full - no longer accepting enrollment)  

Instructor(s): Mrs. Heidi Dodd, Mrs. Jennifer Chrane, Mrs. Abby Madison         

Location: MS robotics/7th grade computer lab--tentative location      

Dates/Times: June 1st - 12th; 8:30-3:00     

Offered To: Incoming 4th-8th graders

Session Description: Students will rotate through 3 different classes each day:

Computer Coding, Lego Engineering, and Lego Robotics.

Computer Coding- Students will learn what is involved in developing webpages and video games.  Then they will learn how to create various web-based projects.

Engineering- The focus will be on engineering concepts, collaboration, and hands-on engineering activities.

Lego Robotics-NXT Camps are about foundational robotics concepts and advancing team challenges. Different levels of programming sophistication will find students working with sound, light, touch, and ultrasonic sensors.

*New students and students who attended last year are both welcome to enroll!

 

Course Description: Build, Design, and Invent (course is full - no longer accepting enrollment)

Location:KMS 120       

Dates/Times:June 15th-18th, 8:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M., and June 22nd-25th 8:00 A.M.-2:00 P.M.        

Offerred To:Incoming 6th-8th grades        

Session Description:Spend a few weeks designing, building, and inventing new and exciting objects.  Challenges will be given daily for the students to solve.  Inventing a solution for the challenges students will use Makey Makey kits, 3D Printer, Legos, K'Nex, Engineering software, and building materials. 

 

Course Description: Passport to Adventure Summer 2015 (course is full - no longer accepting enrollment)   

Instructor(s): Mrs. Prom and Mrs. Starzl

Location: KMS Library

Dates/Times: June 8-12, 2015, from 8 AM – 4 PM (session one)

Session Two Added  - June 15-19, 2015, from 8 AM – 4 PM (course is full - no longer accepting enrollment) 

Offered: To: incoming 6th and 7th grade students

Session Description: Looking for 30 students to join Passport to Adventure Summer 2015. Passport is going to let you experience the best of Kansas City in the summer time. Every day will be a field trip – literally! Hike and explore nature. Nothing says summer like Royals’ baseball. Bask in Gridiron Glory. Take a walkabout through Australia and Africa. Putt you way to a hole-in-one. After each day’s trip, students will work on creating a WeVideo to share with family and friends. Celebrate the good times with family on the last day!

Course Description: KMS Art Adventure Camp  (course is full - no longer accepting enrollment)

Location:KMS  

Dates/Times: June 17th, June 18th, June 24th, June 25th, (9:00A.M. – 2:00P.M., tentative)

Offerred To: Incoming 6th, 7th,and 8th

Session Description: If you love adventure, exploring and art – you will love the Art Adventure Camp for Middle School students this summer.  We will be traveling to some great Kansas City spots and area outdoor attractions to explore, create and learn some new techniques in art.  Be ready to have a fun Artistic Adventure.
